A DOT roadside inspection can happen anywhere, any time — a scale house, a checkpoint, or a routine traffic stop. A Level 1 inspection covers both driver and vehicle, and the goal isn’t to pass by luck. It’s to never actually be at risk of failing.
Most out-of-service violations trace back to the same handful of predictable categories. Here’s where inspectors look first.
1. Brakes
Brake-related issues are consistently the number one cause of out-of-service violations nationally. Inspectors check pushrod stroke, slack adjuster function, and audible air loss — all things that get flagged fast on a truck that hasn’t had a recent brake inspection.
2. Tires
Tread depth minimums are 4/32" on steer tires and 2/32" on all other axles. Inspectors also check for sidewall damage, exposed cord, and proper inflation. Tires are one of the fastest checks in an inspection — and one of the easiest to fail if they haven’t been looked at recently.
3. Lighting
Every marker light, clearance light, and brake light has to work. It’s one of the cheapest fixes on this entire list, and also one of the most common violations — usually because nobody notices a bulb is out until an inspector points a flashlight at it.
4. Coupling and cargo securement
Fifth wheel and kingpin condition, along with straps and chains rated for the load being hauled, get a close look. A worn or improperly locked coupling is treated as a serious safety issue, not a paperwork item.
5. Everything an inspector can see in thirty seconds
Leaking fluids, cracked frame members, missing mud flaps, exhaust leaks near the cab — inspectors are trained to scan for the obvious first. A truck that looks well maintained on approach tends to get a more routine inspection than one that doesn’t.
The pre-trip habit that prevents most violations
A consistent, unhurried pre-trip inspection catches the majority of these issues before a scale or checkpoint ever does. The five minutes it takes is cheap insurance against hours of downtime.
